Royal Jelly for Fertility: Can It Really Improve Egg Quality and Ovulation?

Royal Jelly for Fertility: Can It Really Improve Egg Quality and Ovulation?

The benefits of royal jelly for fertility have been celebrated for centuries. Its long-time use as a natural hormone-supporting fertility tonic is finally being researched, and has shown promising effects in animal studies. Today let’s explore how royal jelly may help boost key fertility hormones, support egg development and ovulation, and protect ovarian health.

What is Royal Jelly?

Royal jelly is a thick, creamy substance produced by worker bees to feed the queen bee throughout her life. It’s the exclusive food source of queen bees, allowing them to grow nearly twice the size, live significantly longer, and have a far more robust reproductive system.

This bee-derived “superfood” is packed with nutrients, from proteins and individual amino acids, to sugar and anti-bacterial fatty acids. Royal jelly also contains B vitamins, notably vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), as well as a variety of minerals and antioxidant compounds.

The exact composition of royal jelly varies depending on bee species, season, and plants that the bees source from. Its diverse nutrient and bioactive profile is part of why it’s being studied for immune support, hormonal balance, and reproductive health.

Royal Jelly’s Impact on Fertility Hormones

Preliminary research from the International Journal of Fertility and Sterility found that daily supplementation with royal jelly significantly increased estrogen and progesterone levels in animal subjects. It also showed that royal jelly supported ovarian and uterine development, therefore helping prime reproductive organs for ovulation and implantation.

While the exact mechanisms are yet to be fully understood, the researchers believe royal jelly’s effects come in part from its phytoestrogen-like compounds. Phytoestrogens are plant-based compounds that mimic the activity of estrogens in the body. The compounds in royal jelly are believed to bind to estrogen receptor β, a receptor subtype that plays a critical role in ovarian function. This binding could help normalize hormone levels in cases of both low or high estrogen.

Other preliminary research in the International Journal of Reproductive BioMedicine highlighted that royal jelly helped directly stimulate progesterone production and improved pregnancy rates. They also showed that in their PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) model, royal jelly helped improve reproductive hormone abnormalities that are common among PCOS cases. This often entails elevated estrogen levels and low progesterone, which contributes to fertility challenges that those with PCOS often face.

Royal Jelly’s Impact on Follicle Development and Ovulation

Beyond hormone production, royal jelly also appears to support follicle development, during which follicles in the ovaries mature to the point of releasing a healthy egg (ovulation). It has been shown to increase follicles at all critical stages of egg development.

Royal jelly even plays a role after ovulation, increasing the number of corpora lutea cells. These cells produce progesterone to support a healthy luteal phase and create a supportive environment for the fetus to grow during early pregnancy. This suggests royal jelly not only helps follicles mature but may also improve ovulation rates and the quality of the luteal phase.

These factors are especially important if you are trying to conceive, but are also critical for maintaining healthy menstrual cycles and optimal reproductive health. In the same PCOS model, royal jelly was shown to improve ovarian structure and in regard to follicle type and corpus luteum formation.

Royal jelly’s combination of hormone-balancing and follicle-supporting actions could make it a useful complement to other natural fertility strategies.

Royal Jelly’s Antioxidant Activity: Protecting Ovarian Tissue and Hormonal Function

Ovarian health also relies on balancing oxidative stress levels. Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals outweigh antioxidants, and we are left with a buildup of harmful compounds that cause damage to our cells. High levels of oxidative stress fuel inflammation and can impair ovarian function, follicle health, and egg quality.

We can combat oxidative stress by boosting up our antioxidant defenses, both by consuming antioxidants and by supporting our body’s own production of antioxidant compounds (like glutathione).

Royal jelly contains antioxidant compounds that can protect ovarian cells from oxidative damage. It was shown to decrease free radical levels (specifically nitric oxide), in the ovaries. Nitric oxide is not always harmful, but in too high amounts and with low antioxidant defenses, it can wreak havoc on fertility. In the PCOS model, researchers also found royal jelly to increase antioxidant capacity.

This antioxidant activity could be especially relevant in today’s fertility landscape, where environmental toxins, chronic stress, and inflammation are common drivers of hormonal dysregulation. This is relevant not only for those trying to conceive, but also for those struggling with PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid dysfunction, and perimenopause.

Looking for Personalized Support on Your Fertility Journey?

While these preliminary research studies are small, their findings are significant and warrant further research on how royal jelly may impact fertility outcomes in humans. Not only may royal jelly help support fertility by increasing estrogen and progesterone levels, but it also may promote healthy follicle development and ovulation, as well as protect reproductive tissues from oxidative stress.
