HPA & Hormone Balance w/ Dr. Sarah Williams

Dr. Sarah Williams of ModRNMed joins us today. Dr. Sarah is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor. In this episode she explains what the relationship is between the Hypothalamus and Hormones, HPA Axis and stressors while also providing some great tips on how to keep the Hypothalamus healthy. Inside tips of HPA & Hormone Balance.

So our hypothalamus is what I like to call the coordinating center for endocrine system, because this is where all of the hormone signaling begins. It’s a structure that’s located in our brain that will then go down and signal to another structure in our brain called the pituitary. And so we can call those HPA axis for short, which is Hypothalamus connecting to the pituitary. And then we had these other downstream effects in communication and signaling that goes to all of these different organs and glands our body and tells them which hormones to release. So the main axis that we have in our body are our HPA Axis, which is our hypothalamus and pituitary communicating with our adrenal glands to secrete cortisol.
And then we also have our HPT axis, which is our thyroid access. So releasing those active circulating thyroid hormones, which really regulate our metabolism. And then we have the HP gonadal axis, which is to our ovaries or testes to secrete our sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone testosterone.
So the main axis that we have in our body are our HPA Axis, which is our hypothalamus and pituitary communicating with our adrenal glands to secrete cortisol. So it’s really important to look at all of these pathways and look at the whole loop to see where dysfunction might be happening. And that is really important because also this operates in a negative feedback loop. So what happens is once we release enough of our estrogen, so to speak, then it will signal back to our Hypothalamus to say, okay, we have enough right now, stop secreting. Let’s keep this in balance. And so if that pathway gets disrupted for any reason, then we might really start having a variety of symptoms that I’m sure we’ll dive into soon.
