Mitochondria Function Testing: The Best Ways to Measure Your Cellular Health

Mitochondria function is the foundation of energy, vitality, and hormone health. While they are often called the energy powerhouses of the cell, mitochondria do far more than just produce energy. They also regulate our body’s cell communication, detoxification, hormone balance (including thyroid function), and even longevity pathways. 

When mitochondria aren’t working optimally, every system in your body can feel the effects. This can lead to changes in athletic performance, metabolic health, hormone health, and even the development of chronic diseases. Why Optimal Mitochondrial Function Matters

Mitochondria are central to your cellular metabolism and overall health. Their most notable role is converting food energy from proteins, carbohydrates, and fat into chemical energy, called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Each of our cells rely on ATP as their primary energy source. Steroid hormones, which include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol, are all produced within the mitochondria. Without the proper resources, namely cholesterol, and mitochondrial environment, our hormone balance can take a serious hit.

Symptoms and Causes of Poor Mitochondrial Function

Mitochondrial dysfunction has also been reported in many cases of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), with PCOS being shown to affect both the quantity and quality of mitochondria in the cells, especially in the cells of the ovary
