Navigating PCOS w/ a Fellow Cyster

I am so happy to have my good friend Jessie Valera, a Registered Dietitian, who specializes in PCOS and Hyperthyroidism on this episode. Navigating PCOS with Jessie as she shares her first hand experience and protocol in living with PCOS.  We discuss PCOS with diabetes, fitness, nutrition and stress management.

PCOS it’s downs for polycystic ovary syndrome. So it’s essentially a hormonal endocrine and metabolic disorder. And so it usually affects women within their reproductive years. And so it’s essentially an issue that relates to failure of ovulating. And also it’s associated with high levels of male hormones, which we also call androgens in the body. So it can affect one out of 10 women. And like we mentioned before, it can misdiagnosed or just not diagnosed at all. And then it’s pretty complex hormonal condition. So that’s, you know, that’s what leads to that misdiagnosis, since there’s a lot of pieces to the puzzle to look at.

The main three dive diagnostic criteria that one should look at is, like you said, an ultrasound is just a small piece of the puzzle, but that’s not the only thing to diagnose diagnosed with PCOS you also want to look at, are you experiencing physical signs or symptoms of that androgen excess? So again, that antigen excess are those high amounts of those male hormones. So then like high testosterone in the system, and that can lead to those unwanted side effects like the acne or the excessive hair growth in addition, or you just get a straight blood work showing that you do have those high levels of the androgen hormones in your system. The third thing too is also looking again at symptoms like irregular periods or a loss of period. So having two or more of those criteria would definitely kind of fall in the line of having PCOS and those things that you want to look for.
