Q+A Hypothalamus and Hormone Balance

In this episode I answer questions submitted by listeners about the Hypothalamus and Hormone Balance. Tune in to learn about some common questions about the HPA Axis you might have!

So today our first question is on how do you regulate hormones after having your IUD removed?
Now the IUD there’s several different types, but the one you’re probably referring to is the hormonal IUD such as the Mirena, the IUD in itself is actually not going to impact your hormone signaling as much as what a oral contraceptive pill. And the reason for this is because with the IUD, you can still ovulate and this is dependent off of you individually and how long you’ve had the IUD. Generally the hormonal IUD will suppress ovulation for the first year, but after that first year, you will typically start to ovulate again, because there’s less hormones being released. How to know if you ovulate is to test, you can purchase ovulation test strips, or you can also track your basal body temperature with a thermometer first thing in the morning when you get a temperature spike, that is when you’ll notice that your ovulation has occurred, and then you’ll see your temperature drop back down.
And that’s when you’re out of that fertile window. So that’s a really great way to know if you are ovulating, if you are, then once you get your IUD removed, there really shouldn’t be much change. You should notice that you can become fertile almost immediately. And that those hormone levels will start to increase pretty, pretty quickly back up to your endogenous or your body’s own production of hormone levels as they should. The one thing to know about the IUD or any form of birth control is that as I mentioned in our practical implementation episode, any type of birth control can impair the release and it’s communication with the adrenals and the cortisol release.
